Du bist Terrorist
Lives and works in Germany.
Du bist Terrorist by German animator and filmmaker Alexander Lehmann is a satirical response to the 2005 German social-marketing campaign Du bist Deutschland (You are Germany). Released online in 2009, the award-winning web video became a viral sensation, receiving 250,000 views within three days and considerable controversy through its tongue-in-cheek observations of Germany’s political situation.
Staged as a faux campaign, Du bist Terrorist highlights how German citizens are increasingly treated as suspicious as Germany’s political parties transform the nation into a society under surveillance. In representing both current and possible forms of state monitoring, Lehmann comments on the nature of surveillance in Germany at present, and indicates what the near future will look like as mass surveillance continues to implemented.
