Andrew Norman Wilson
Workers Leaving the Googleplex

Lives and works in Brooklyn, New York, USA.

In September 2007 Wilson was jointly hired by Transvideo Studios and Google to work on video production. While stationed at Google’s headquarters in Mountain View, California, Wilson became aware of a hidden caste system within the world’s largest provider of digital information. As a contractor (marked out by his red badge), he was entitled to gourmet lunches but not to the ski trips, stock options, and holiday cash bonuses available to white-badged Googlers.

Referencing the Lumière Brother’s 1895 film Workers Leaving the Factory, Wilson’s work tracks the mysterious yellow-badged employees of Google’s ScanOps division. These employees are responsible for digitising vast reams of information, yet do not receive any privileges within the company. His attempts to learn more about them cost Wilson his job.
